Following the opening of the development centre at Eugen Forschner GmbH, which took place two years ago, the next extension of the building was now inaugurated on Tuesday 2 August 2016. Fitting of the great occasion, Volker Kauder, in his capacity as parliamentary group leader of the CDU/CSU faction in the German Bundestag arrived for the event in Spaichingen with a large delegation.

Room for ideas – the Forschner development centre in Spaichingen

After some brief welcoming words from Dr Gert Forschner, owner and managing director of the family business, the visitors were familiarised with the company in an entertaining PowerPoint presentation. The business divisions cabling systems, precision turned parts, electromechanical systems, SCR systems, in-house developments and the numerous international production sites of the corporate group were some of the items mentioned.

Volker Kauder appeared to be impressed by the consistent internationalisation and asked meaningful questions in response relating to the specific cooperation of the individual locations. Dr Gert Forschner explained that series production was no longer taking place at the headquarters in Spaichingen due to reasons of cost and the competition situation. According to Dr Forschner, this made themes such as expertise and innovations all the more important to the location nowadays. 'Creative workers' – meaning competent specialist staff who initiate ideas in technological fields of the future and bring them to series-production maturity – are increasingly gaining in significance.

Ultimately, the Spaichingen headquarters acts as a kind of 'creative control centre' for all global activities. Already as of today, around 50 technicians and engineers are working in the expanded development centre. "And there are still vacancies", as Dr Gert Forschner stressed. In total, more than 2,700 staff are currently employed around the world.

Medium-size German companies and electric mobility

And lastly, as part of the company presentation, the participants were offered sufficient chance to discuss the future of medium-size German companies with one another and also to point out related opportunities but also risks. Electric mobility attracted particular interest in this regard. This, of course, is of special relevance to the Forschner Group from a product perspective. After all, Dr Ralph Böhm, head of research and development, is involved in the 'South West Germany Electric Mobility' group to pick up on trends and to actively drive them forwards together with like-minded enthusiasts.

In general, the automotive industry is the most important client base for Forschner, even though more and more new sectors – such as medical technology – are being opened up and developed.

During the subsequent tour around the development centre and the new extension in particular, Volker Kauder and his entourage were able to assess the spacious facilities and state-of-the-art machinery and systems. Volker Kauder did not pass up the chance to ask some of the Forschner employees about their activities and their lives in general. It became clear despite all the internationalisation that many of the employees of the development centre called Spaichingen or neighbouring areas their home. That inventive Swabian spirit is always in demand.

Symbolic finale

At the end of the tour, Volker Kauder and Dr Gert Forschner expressed their mutual thanks and respect in short addresses. A red ribbon was cut jointly in a symbolic act to officially open the new extension of the development centre. Some reinvigoration was then provided at just the right time with some light nibbles. After all, Volker Kauder and his delegation had a number of other appointments to attend in the vicinity on the same day.
